Yoni Steaming 101

Yoni steaming, otherwise known as vaginal steaming, is an ancient practice used in cultures including Korea, China, Ayurveda (India) and even the Ancient Mayans. It has been used for treatment of infertility, irregular periods, menstrual pain, PMS, endometriosis, hemorrhoids, hormone imbalance, vaginal discharge and vaginal infections.

In recent years it has become very popular in natural and holistic healing circles. While Naturopaths have been known to recommend Yoni steaming as part of their treatment plan, it is doubtful any OB/GYNs are going to suggest a yoni steam. Yoni steaming is not well supported by any evidence. There are no studies that have concluded yoni steaming has significant health benefits. For this reason it is easy to write off yoni steaming as an ineffective health fad. I definitely had this reaction initially…

However, I have personally yoni steamed for a few years now and while I’m not  convinced it will cure any major problems, I do believe it supports women in having a deeper connection with their body, sexuality, pelvic system and it is a beautiful ritualistic practice. The emotional, spiritual, and mental benefits of yoni steaming can go a long way in creating an improved environment in your body for physical healing.

If you’re curious about trying Yoni steaming, here are my tips…

1-Yoni steaming isn’t a medical treatment. If you have a medical condition, continue to seek medical care. Yoni steaming can be part of your treatment strategy but should not replace consulting with a doctor.

2-Don’t cook your Yoni, make sure the water is steaming at a comfortable temperature. It should never be uncomfortably hot but rather delightfully warm and cozy

3-Avoid using a plastic container for your steaming water and steaming on your toilet is not suggested

4-Herbs are great… if you know what you are doing. Plain old water also works just fine.

5-When in doubt begin by going to a Yoni Steaming spa like Yoni Steam Honolulu- CLICK HERE for details. Yoni steaming can be done at home.

6-It is recommended you steam for 30-minutes. This is a great self care time for meditation, breath and simply being quiet, still and peaceful
