Balance in Motherhood… Is it even Possible?

Last week I had a conversation with a close friend and fellow Occupational Therapist, Carline Reaume, about balance within motherhood. We are both moms and each run our own small women’s health businesses. It was a delightful conversation and you can catch it on my Podcast Mama Wellness Weekly when it airs this coming Wednesday July 31, 2024. On SPOTIFY or  APPLE

Since our conversation I have been mulling over the ways in which I achieve balance within motherhood and all I can say is…

I don’t achieve or even strive to achieve balance…because even in the moments when you feel balanced, in the next moment that balance you achieved is very likely gone. So a motherhood spent trying to find balance is a motherhood led from a place of lack. If you’re always trying to get somewhere you’re not, how can you enjoy, to the fullest, where you are right now?

Modern motherhood is so much about doing all the things but it should be an experience to be savored and enjoyed. If you’re caught up doing all sorts of things, to serve your ego’s experience of motherhood, you are missing out on all the fun, peace and joy that is available to you in motherhood. I’d urge you to reflect on what “things” you do as a mother that bring you more fun, peace, and joy… and do those things more! On the flip side, the things you do that bring frustration, resentment, and overwhelm… perhaps need to be done less, or with a different approach, delegated or eliminated.

As my motherhood winds on, I have decided to strive for feeling good and achieving a sense of fulfillment and connection to myself over a feeling of balance. I have come to call this living a soul-aligned motherhood.

Soul-aligned motherhood is not a singular destination, but rather an intentional choice to come back to a mindset and connection to self that allows you to feel good, whole and connected to yourself while going through the experience of motherhood.

In other words, at its core soul-aligned motherhood is the concept in action that when we take care of ourselves on a full mind-body-spirit level, we show up better as mothers. Our relationships are strengthened, our capacity to nurture and give back grow and we can experience a more easeful and beautiful motherhood.
