Every woman benefits from taking the time to understand and observe the link between their breath and their perineum. This is especially important during pregnancy!
Your perineum is the expanse of skin between your vaginal opening and anus. It is your south pole.
Every time you inhale, your perineum lowers/lengthens slightly giving way to the increase in pressure within the body. Your diaphragm does the same with every inhale- it descends lower in the body.
Upon exhaling, the pressure in the body is reduced and the diaphragm rises, as does the perineum.
Observing this link is tremendously helpful in understanding the role of pressure in your body and pelvic floor.
To better observe this, I recommend laying on your side and laying a finger or 2 on your perineum. For the best result and easiest observation, do this without clothing on. Make sure you are comfortable, with your head supported.
Begin taking comfortable, slow and deep breaths. The goal is to observe the slight movement in your perineum with each inhale/exhale. To do so the pressure of touch is VERY light. It’s more of a laying on of the finger(s), there is no push. I prefer using my middle finger, but there is no right way.
When done successfully, you will feel the descent of the tissues gently into your finger(s) on your inhale and the rising of tissues away from your finger(s) on the exhale.
Did this all feel way too complicated but you know you would benefit from figuring this out?
That’s precisely why I created my mini-course “Aligned with Birth”. Grab all the details HERE and enroll now for ONLY $25 (usually $45)!!
