This is from the book “Rewilding Motherhood: Your Path to an Empowered Feminine Spirituality” by Shannon Evans, which is a bit outside my typical realm due to its link with christianity, but I must say that Shannon Evans has delivered some of the most profound quotes I have read in awhile about motherhood and how we perceive ourselves when we become mothers.
Like,
“Womanhood often bows in deference to motherhood”
or
“The work of her soul is never the most imminent need in the line of a mothers vision”
And
“Motherhood does not tell us who we are. Motherhood tells us how to find ourselves”
Here is a journaling exercise from “Rewilding Motherhood” that I just love! It is designed to help you reflect on your feelings about identity and motherhood.
Set a timer for 10-minutes and free write whatever comes to mind on the topic of identity and motherhood. There is no right or wrong here, just pure stream of consciousness writing. Go…
When complete, mull over these questions for help processing what you wrote:
- In what ways have I hidden behind motherhood as my identity?
- When I think about separating my role as mother from my identity as a person, what fears and hopes do I experience?
- What is something I have always wanted to pursue or learn but have not because it felt silly, selfish, or otherwise out of line? Could there be an invitation there?
I hope you find this insightful and helpful
Love,
Hilary
