Lessons from Cycle Syncing

Nearly 2 years ago I got serious about tracking my menstrual cycle. My primary motivation was to better understand my cycle and to have a back up method of birth control, but over the course of the past 2 years I discovered so many other benefits! Here are some of the biggest ones…

-Knowing where I am at in my cycle led me to connect the dots between my cycle phase and my mood. From there I was able to take action and make shifts that better supported my mood. Recently, at the recommendation of my naturopath I have started taking some herbs and I would have never even known what question to ask that led to her recommendation without cycle syncing!

-Knowing that I’m going to have boundless energy and super focus around cycle days 10-17. This is when I allow myself to go hard on work and don’t feel so guilty skimping on rest.

-Learning to respect my monthly rhythms, because whether I respect them or not they are showing up. I celebrate when my life coincides with my natural energy level throughout the phases of my cycle and roll with it better when it doesn’t because I understand why there is the mismatch.

-Knowing that my cycle is variable but within the range of normal. I never could predict my period and it always just arrived (or didn’t). I LOVE knowing with a 1-2 days accuracy when I need to slow down and rest while I bleed.

-I have learned so much more about each phase of my cycle and what is best for me in terms of how I spend my time and energy. No, I don’t completely cycle sync but where I am in my cycle is now a factor in making decisions about how to exercise, how hard to push myself with work and how much rest/sleep I should allow myself.

How I track my cycle is a blend of tech and not tech. I opted to use the app called Natural Cycles and LOVE it! Almost every morning (~80-90%) I take my temperature with a thermometer before I get up and enter my temperature in the app. The more temperatures added, the more accurate the predictions get. Now, one year in, I have a nearly 99% accurate calendar of my cycle for the next 3 months because of all the data I entered throughout the last 2 years.

What I have opted against is using the Oura ring to track my temperature. I just don’t like the idea of electronics being on me all night long! The Oura ring is a way to not have to take your temperature and may provide even more accurate data than manually taking your temperature. If you are more into tech and all the biometrics, go for it! It’s just not my jam.
