When I met my husband there were 2 things that immediately stuck out to me about his rhythms… He ate way LESS than me on a daily basis and slept way MORE!
The eating less thing didn’t bother me at all and it actually supported me in losing a few extra pounds from graduate school. The sleep thing wasn’t a big deal either… until 10 years later when kids came along.
I spent the better part of the first 4 years of parenting often pissed off about how much my husband slept or needed to “rest”. I just couldn’t understand why he needed so much time and it was often the source of bickering or worse.
Then in 2022 I dove into the world of Human Design and so much rapidly shifted. I learned that my husband is a projector and I am a generator. I’m not going to dive into the details here (I’m definitely not a human design expert) but a big difference between projectors and generators relates to our energy. As a projector you take in others energy, while generators create their own energy. Projectors are often able to get more done in less time but require more rest. In fact, when generators sleep in the same room as projectors they pull energy from the projector.
Hmm… I thought… Could this be why he sleeps so much better on the couch??
The moment I learned this, my husband’s energy (or lack thereof) made so much more sense!! Simply put, I actually pulled energy from him and him simply being a projector meant he naturally had a greater need for rest. For some reason, the moment I learned this, so much of my frustration, disappointment and anger surrounding my husband’s sleepiness dissolved and disappeared. It just made sense!
This revelation led me to a lot more deep diving into the world of Human Design. I have learned so much about myself and every layer revealed has felt so aligned with how I live and function in the world.
I share this story in hopes that you will be inspired to learn more about your human design and the human design of those in your family. Knowing human design can help make sense of so many patterns and rhythms in your life and guide you toward optimizing your strength and minimizing your challenges.
This week on the podcast, I interviewed Stephanie Hoggue of Embrace Your Design. We talked specifically about the benefit of learning about your children’s design to assist in showing up to mealtime, bedtime, and other common routines based on each of their designs. When parents approach each child according to their design it can make the daily struggles feel so much easier to navigate and even help them disappear altogether.
